Studio portrait of 2424 Private (Pte) Donald John McPherson Smith, 44th Battalion from Perth, Western Australia. He had previously served in the Boer War and was a 38 year old accountant prior to enlisting on 11 April 1916. After embarking for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Sydney on 13 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Macquarie, he served with the Battalion on the Western Front. He was wounded in action on 20 April 1917 at Ploegsteert, Belgium and recovered to rejoin the Battalion on 14 May 1917. Pte Smith was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 11 October 1917 and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele.
