Description

Studio portrait of 2247 Private (Pte) George Henry Smith, 59th Battalion from Wild Duck Creek, via Knowsley, Victoria. A 31 year old market gardener prior to enlisting on 18 April 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements of the 60th Battalion from Melbourne on 1 August 1916 aboard HMAT Orsova. He was wounded in action in France in April 1918 and on recovering from his wounds transferred to the 59th Battalion on 25 September 1918. During the Allies final offensive, he was wounded in action on 29 September 1918 near Bellicourt, France and died from those wounds on 3 October 1918 at the 6th General Hospital at Rouen, France. Pte Smith is buried in the St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen.
