Portrait of 795 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Harry Mercer Smith, (also known as Harry Mercer-Smith) 9th Battalion from South Brisbane, Queensland. A 21 year old engineer prior to enlisting on 31 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with H Company from Brisbane on 24 September 1914 aboard HMAT Omrah. He served at Gallipoli where he was twice wounded in action. After being evacuated to Malta for medical treatment, he died of his wounds on 17 June 1915. L Cpl Smith is buried in the Pieto Military Cemetery, Malta.
