Description
Studio portrait of 3691 Private (Pte) William Walter Randal Southwood, 12th Battalion from Adelaide, South Australia. A 32 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 11 January 1917, he embarked for overseas with the 9th Reinforcements of the 5th Pioneer Battalion from Adelaide on 10 February 1917 aboard HMAT Seang Bee. He joined the 12th Battalion in France on 12 August 1917 and was wounded in action on 7 October 1917 at Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment, he died of his wounds in the Horton County of London War Hospital, Epsom on 12 October 1917 and was buried in the Brookwood Cemetery, England.
