Studio portrait of 4200 Private (Pte) Herbert Victor Stait, 24th Battalion from Coburg, Victoria. A 26 year old baker prior to enlisting on 28 December 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 7 March 1916 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. He was wounded in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 May 1917. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to his Battalion in August 1917. Pte Stait was killed in action in the Battle of Broodseinde in Belgium on 4 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave.
