Studio portrait of 1239 Corporal (Cpl) Henry Richard Kent Stanley, 12th Battalion from Avoca, Tasmania. An 18 year old miner prior to enlisting on 10 September 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 1st Reinforcements from Melbourne on 22 December 1914 aboard HMAT Themistocles. He was wounded in action on Gallipoli on 17 June 1915 and evacuated to Lemnos for medical treatment. After recovering, he rejoined his Battalion at Gallipoli on 10 July 1915. In August 1915 he was admitted to hospital in Egypt suffering from enteric fever. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment, he rejoined his Battalion in France on 6 October 1916. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 14 October 1916 and to Corporal on 27 February 1917. Cpl Stanley was killed in action near Boursies, France sometime between 6 and 10 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
