Description
Studio portrait of 2255 Private (Pte) John Samuel Stockdale, 46th Battalion from South Yarra, Melbourne, Victoria. A 44 year old driver prior to enlisting on 22 March 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 16 August 1916 aboard HMAT Orontes. After further training in England, he joined the Battalion in France in November 1916. He was wounded in action near Zonnebeeke, Belgium on 11 October 1917 and died from his wounds the next day. Pte Stockdale is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
