Studio portrait of 400 Private (Pte) William Britton Stone, 5th Battalion from Tinamba, Victoria. A 42 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 29 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with A Company, 37th Battalion from Melbourne on 3 June 1916 aboard HMAT Persic. After further training in England, he proceeded to France on 1 October 1916 to join the 5th Battalion (his service number was amended to 400B). Pte Stone was killed in action at Flers, France on 2 November 1916 and is buried in the AIF Burial Ground, Grass Lane, Flers.
