Description
Ramale Valley, New Britain. Group portrait of Australian Roman Catholic sisters at the internment camp where they have lived since the Japanese occupation of Rabaul. They are in good health and spirits. There were more than seventy women in this camp including Dutch, German, Australian, Irish, Polish, Czechoslovakian and women of mixed backgrounds. Contact with the camp was made by Allied troops and representatives of the Australian Red Cross following the surrender of the Japanese. Identified in the foreground, left to right: Sister (Sr) Borgia; Sr Adela; Sr Flavia; Sr Editha; Sr Michael; Sr Philomen.
