Studio portrait of 840 Sergeant (Sgt) Roy Thompson, 11th Battalion from Geraldton, Western Australia. A 20 year old stationer prior to enlisting on 15 August 1914, he embarked for overseas with G Company from Fremantle, Western Australia on 2 November 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He served with the 11th Battalion at Gallipoli where he was killed in action on 2 May 1915. Sgt Thompson is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey with others who have no known grave. His brother 841 Private (Pte) Claude Thompson embarked at the same time and in the same unit as Roy but he returned to Australia on 5 February 1918.
