Studio portrait of 2238 Private (Pte) Arthur Thorn, 27th Battalion from Port Pirie, South Australia. A 29 year old metallurgical chemist prior to enlisting on 2 June 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1915 aboard HMAT Star of England. After further training in Egypt, he arrived in France in March 1916 and was wounded in action on 4 August 1916. He recovered and returned to his unit and then was later killed in action at Dernancourt, France on 5 November 1916. Pte Thorn is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, France with other show have no known grave. His brother, Corporal Reginald Samuel Thorn, 10th Battalion was killed in action on 24 July 1916. See image HO05743.
