Studio portrait of 4253 Private (Pte) James Craven Thornthwaite, 47th Battalion from Grafton, ...
Studio portrait of 4253 Private (Pte) James Craven Thornthwaite, 47th Battalion from Grafton, NSW. An 18 year old painter prior to enlisting on 4 September 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 15th Battalion from Brisbane on 3 January 1916 aboard HMAT Kyarra. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 47th Battalion in April 1916 and deployed with them to France in June 1916. He was wounded in action on 12 August 1916 and after recovering and returning to his unit on 1 October 1916, he was wounded again two days later. He subsequently took ill and died on 22 October 1916 and is buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery, Reninghelst, Belgium. Although the portrait shows Pte Thornthwaite wearing Corporal stripes on this sleeve, there is no record of his being promoted beyond the rank of Private.
