Studio portrait of 1630 Private (Pte) Frederick Hamlet Wagstaff, 7th Battalion from Maryborough, Victoria. A 27 year old asphalter prior to enlisting on 23 October 1914, he embarked for overseas with the 3rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on 19 February 1915 aboard HMAT Runic. He joined the 7th Battalion at Gallipoli on 8 May 1915 and was wounded in action on 8 September. After being evacuated to England for medical treatment, he returned to Egypt in March 1916 and arrived in France in May 1916 to rejoin his battalion. Pte Wagstaff was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 24 July 1916 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
