Description
Studio portrait of 3190 Private (Pte) Frederick John Ward, 37th Battalion from Carpendiet, Victoria. A 20 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 3 October 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 7th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 19 February 1917 aboard HMAT Ballarat. He joined the 37th Battalion in France where he was wounded and evacuated to England for medical treatment. On recovering, he rejoined the battalion and was mortally wounded in action near Amiens, France on 13 June 1918. Pte Ward is buried in the Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette, France. His older brother, 3154 Pte Leslie William Ward, also of the 37th Battalion, was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 4 October 1917. (See image H06253)
