Description
Studio portrait of 1986 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) George Wemyss, 23rd Battalion from Seymour, Victoria. A 24 year old hairdresser prior to enlisting on 15 June 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 3rd Reinforcements of the 23rd Battalion from Melbourne on 26 August 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises. He was promoted to Temporary L Cpl on 27 July 1916, shortly before receiving a gunshot wound to his right eye. Following his return to duty, he was further promoted to Temporary Corporal on 4 April 1917 and was then killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 May 1917. He is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
