Studio portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) Norman Leslie Weynand, 9th Battalion from Newmarket, Brisbane, Queensland. A 20 year old clerk prior to enlisting as a Private on 18 August 1914, he embarked for overseas as a Corporal (service number 66) with A Company 9th Battalion from Brisbane on 24 September 1914 aboard HMAT Omrah. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on 9 November 1915 while serving at Gallipoli and was promoted to Lieutenant on 20 February 1916 before embarking for France. Lt Weynand was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 23 July 1916 and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
