Description
Studio portrait of Second Lieutenant Norman Robson Wilkinson, Field Company Engineers (FCE), from Sydney, NSW. A 26 year old analytical industrial chemist prior to being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the AIF on 16 March 1916, he embarked for overseas with the Officer of FCE Reinforcements from Sydney on 9 April 1916 aboard HMAT Nestor. After a short period in Egypt, in June 1916 he arrived in France where he joined the 4th FCE. He was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium on 26 September 1917 and buried on the Cauderoy Road near Ypres, Belgium. After the war, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
