Studio portrait of 4289 Private (Pte) Robert Thomas Windsor, 2nd Battalion from York, Victoria. A 23 year old labourer prior to enlistment on 9 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 4th Battalion from Sydney on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Aeneas. After joining the 2nd Battalion in Egypt, he deployed with them to the Western Front where he was wounded in action at Pozieres, France on 24 July 1916. He was evacuated to the UK for medical treatment and returned to his battalion in France on 13 November 1916. Pte Windsor was killed in action on 28 December 1916 and buried in the vicinity of Gueudecourt, France. After the war, his grave could not be located and his name was inscribed on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France with other Australians who have no known grave.
