Studio portrait of 3307 Lance Corporal Reginald John Williams, 1st Pioneer Battalion from Bega, NSW. A 21 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 17 September 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 7th Reinforcements of the 19th Infantry Battalion from Sydney on 20 December 1915 aboard HMAT Suevic. Whilst in transit through Egypt, he transferred to the 4th Battalion and then to the 1st Pioneer Battalion. Shortly after arriving in France, he was wounded in action, promoted to Lance Corporal and Mentioned in Despatches. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium on 17 September 1917 and was buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.
