Studio portrait of 1346 Company Sergeant Major (CSM) Alfred Arthur Wood, 19th Battalion from Auburn, NSW. A 20 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 19 February 1915, he embarked for overseas with D Company, 19th Battalion from Melbourne on 25 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic. He joined the 19th Battalion at Gallipoli where he was wounded in action on 2 September 1915 and evacuated to Malta for medical treatment. He was subsequently awarded a Military Medal for his actions at Gallipoli. On recovering from his wounds, he proceeded to France where he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicuous and consistent gallantry particularly on 25 August 1916 at Pozieres, France. He was again wounded in action on 14 November 1916 at Flers, France and evacuated to England for medical treatment only to die of his wounds in hospital on 14 December 1916. CSM Wood is buried in the Stourbridge Cemetery, Worcestershsire, United Kingdom.
