Description

Studio portrait of 5211 Private Leslie Andrew Wood MM, 52nd Battalion from Pioneer, Tasmania. A 20 year old tin miner prior to enlisting on 14 January 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 16th Reinforcements of the 12th Battalion from Melbourne on 29 March 1916 aboard RMS Orontes. While serving on the Western Front, he was wounded in action near Messines Ridge, Belgium on 10 June 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment and to have his arm amputated. He was awarded a Military Medal and arrived back in Australia on 21 March 1918. [See also image H05514.]
