Studio portrait of 2423 Private (Pte) Aubrey James Yarra, 38th Battalion from Flemington, Victoria. A 27 year old carpenter prior to enlisting on 29 July 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 20 October 1916 aboard HMAT Port Lincoln. While undergoing further training in England, he was hospitalised with influenza and later joined the 38th Battalion in France in April 1917. He was appointed a Corporal (Cpl) on 15 July 1917 and killed in action in Belgium on 13 October 1917. Cpl Yarra is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium.
