Description

In the course of securing the Rabaul area following landings by troops of 4 Infantry Brigade on 10 September, a cemetery was discovered off Tunnel Hill road. The cemetery contained bodies of Allied servicemen and the Japanese had made some attempt to restore it before the arrival of Australian troops. An Australian soldier of 29/46 Infantry Battalion, examines one of the graves with its newly erected cross and fresh flowers. The Japanese writing on the cross indicates that it is the grave of 271707 Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) John Evelyn Todd, 11 Squadron RAAF. Sqn Ldr Todd was the pilot of PBY Catalina A24-34 which was shot down in Jacquinot Bay, New Britain on 2 February 1944. He died as a prisoner of war (POW) of the Japanese on 22 July 1944.
