MADANG, NEW GUINEA. 1944-08-23. THE CREW OF A CHURCHILL IV TANK DOING A MAINTENANCE CHECK ON THE WHARF AFTER IT HAD BEEN UNLOADED FROM THE AMERICAN LIBERTY SHIP, NORMAN J. COLMAN. THIS VESSEL BROUGHT A CARGO OF 32 TANKS TO THE AREA. OF THESE 3 SHERMAN AND 3 CHURCHILL TANKS WERE SENT OUT BY THE BRITISH WAR OFFICE FOR JUNGLE TRIALS WHILE THE REMAINING 26 ARE FOR THE 2/4TH ARMOURED REGIMENT. IDENTIFIED PERSONNEL ARE:- QX23674 CORPORAL N.J. SIMPSON (1); QX18244 CORPORAL E.C. STROPHAIR (2); NX55091 LIEUTENANT F.G. FRY (3); QX23014 TROOPER A. HODDA (4).
