Studio portrait of 7073 Private (Pte) Montague Romeo, 6th Battalion from Hastings, Victoria. He originally enlisted on 11 September 1914 at the age of 20 only to be discharged on 5 October 1914 as "unlikely to become an efficient soldier." At the age of 22, he re-enlisted on 28 September 1916 and embarked for overseas with the 23rd Reinforcements from Melbourne on 23 November 1916 aboard HMAT Hororata. While serving on the Western Front, he was wounded in action at Zillebeke Bund, Belgium on 20 September 1917 and evacuated to England for medical treatment. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to his unit in France on 23 December 1917. Pte Romeo was killed in action near Strazeele, France on 5 June 1918 and is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
