Portrait of NX365 Major General John Joseph Murray DSO, MC, VD taken at Marreeba, Atherton Tableland, Queensland on 29 September 1944.

John Joseph Murray was awarded the Distinguished Service Order and Military Cross and as an infantry officer in the First World War. He served in the militia during the interwar years, and in 1940 joined the Second AIF. He was given command of the 20th Brigade, which became one of the first Australian forces to right Rommel's Afrika Korps. Murray led a successful fighting withdrawal to Tobruk, where he and his men played an important part in halting and eventually repelling the German advance. For his leadership during this period, Murray was awarded a Bar to his DSO.
