Description

Discusses service in 26th Light Horse Regiment (Tasmania Mounted Infantry) prior to the First World War at Wynyard under Lieutenant Tyrell; Easter Encampments at Mona Vale; enlisted in the AIF in 1916, training at Claremont Tasmania where he met Major James Martyn Clerke, joined the 3rd Light Horse Regiment and went to Egypt with Major Clerke and other 3rd Light Horse reinforcements. Colonel Bell; the 3rd Light Horse Regiment attack at Es Salt, driven back to Jordan Valley, barbed wire entanglement, captured two Turks, Trooper James from Hobart wounded, General Allenby addresses Light Horse prior to the attack. Treatment of captured Turks and Germans. Second battle at Esalt, Trooper Ted O'Brien almost killed by exploding bomb while repairing telephone lines. Capture of the German gun "Jericho Jane"; Colonel Bell and the riots at Cario; waiting for troop ship at Suez Canal, returned to Melbourne; got home 30 June 1919, farming at Takone, Tasmania after the war.
