A group of infantrymen and light horsemen in a trench on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The lighthorseman on the left at the back who is smoking a pipe is 211 Trooper (Tpr) Andrew Powell Yeates, 9th Light Horse, aged 54, father to the soldier in the foreground, his son 1103 Private James August Yeates, 3rd Australian General Hospital (AGH). Both men enlisted in 1914. Tpr Yeates, of Orroroo SA, enlisted on 11 September 1914 (three days before his son). He died at sea on 30 August 1915 of wounds sustained near Lone Pine three days earlier, and was buried at sea near the Greek island of Lemnos. In civilian life he was an auctioneer and agent and a lieutenant in the Flinders Light Horse; his Roll of Honour Circular states that this group 'enlisted to a man'.
