Higgins, Mervyn Bournes (Captain, b.1887 - d.1916)
Collection relating to the First World War service of Captain Mervyn Bournes Higgins, 8th Australian Light Horse Regiment. Collection consists of a bound volume of typed transcripts of letters and extracts, telegrams, reports, etc written by various people between 1915 and 1918. The typescripts consists of: a few letters written by Higgins to his mother (including one handwritten letter); descriptions of events at Gallipoli that Higgins would have participated in; condolence letters written to his father the Hon Mr Justice Henry Bournes Higgins KC following the death of his son at Magdhaba on 23 December 1916. Also included is a news cutting from 1915 entitled "Battle Ended - Lone Pine Trenches Taken - Another Attack Fails", and a 1917 letter to the Hon Mr Justice Henry Bournes Higgins KC notifying him of the award of Mentioned in Despatches made to his son.
Biographical notes: Captain Mervyn Bournes Higgins, Adjutant, HQ, 8 Australian Light Horse. Mentioned in Despatches. Killed in action 23 December 1916. Age 29. Son of Justice Henry Bournes Higgins and Mary Alice Higgins, of Doona, Malvern, Victoria, Australia.
