Description

Collection relating to the service of 454 Corporal Howard Taylor McKern, 4 Battalion AIF, Australia, at sea, Egypt, Gallipoli, 1914-1915. Collection consists of two original diaries written in black covered note books, a short note from McKern to his father, and a photocopy of the earlier diary (made by AWM for access purposes). The first diary is dated 1914-1915 and covers McKern's enlistment in 1914 and his voyage to Egypt. The second diary is dated 1915 and covers his training in Egypt, the landing on Gallipoli and the Gallipoli Campaign as McKern experienced it. Both diaries contain regular entries, some of which are quite detailed.

Biographical note: 454 Corporal Howard Taylor McKern, 4 Battalion, AIF: agriculturalist; of Mosman, NSW; born Arncliffe, NSW; educated at Summer Hill (NSW) Public School, at Hurlstone Agricultural High School, and at Wagga Wagga (NSW) Experimental Farm; was a public school cadet and latterly a member of the League of Frontiersmen; joined the AIF on 23 August 1914; died at Malta on 15 August 1915, of wounds received at Lone Pine on August 6; age at time of death, 22 years 3 months.
