Ross, James Stuart Leslie (Lieutenant, b.1895 - d.1919)
Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant James Stuart Leslie Ross, No. 2 Squadron Australia Flying Corps [AFC]. Collection consists of a book of handwritten copies of letters written by Ross to his family between 1916 and 1917, covering his voyage from Australia, and training with the Royal Flying Corps [RFC] in England. Also included is an In Memoriam card, news clippings and a poem relating to his death, as well as photographs of his grave in Brookwood cemetery in England.
At the end of the war, Lieutenant Ross and Lieutenant Roger Douglas MC, DCM entered the contest to be the first Australian aviators to fly from Britain to Australia. They were both killed on killed 13 November 1919 when the aircraft they were flying crash shortly after takeoff.
