Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of Private Hubertus Petrus Verwayen, Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. Pte Verwayen was a prisoner of war of the Japanese. While in Java D camp he sent a postcard to his wife which is written in Malay. Roughly translated, he tell his wife that he is in good health as he hopes they are, and how happy he would be if he were able to see them all once more. He also states that any response must be sent by way of a postcard also written in Malay. Pte Verwayen died while a prisoner of the Japanese, working on the Burma-Thai railway and is buried in the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery in Thailand. His wife and son settled in Australia after the war.
