Marx, Ludwig (b.1892 - d.1959)
Description
Collection relating to Ludwig Marx, a German soldier in the First World War, and activist prior and during the Second World War. Marx opposed Hitler's regime and was arrested by the Gestapo in 1938 for his outspoken political and religious views. Initially, he was held in jail at Brauweiler after which he was transferred to Dachau. He was released early in 1939 after pressure from his colleagues in Cologne was brought to bear on the Government. In 1939, Marx and his family left Germany for Australia where he settled, and assisted Sydney's Criminal Investigations Branch interrogating prospective German internees.
The collection consists of two cards sent to Marx at Brauweiler Holding Camp, one card from Marx sent from Dachau, a receipt from Dachau, and two armbands from Dachau bearing Marx prisoner number 27219.
