Description

Collection related to Bob Scates, a draft resistor who was sent to Pentridge Prison in 1972 following his failure to obey a call up notice for national service. He was released on 6 December 1972 following the election of the Whitlam government. Collection consists of: 1. A letter from the primary school aged daugher of Betty Jones, Meredith (not dated but assumed to be 10 May 1972); 2. A letter from Betty Jones, a supporter of the draft resisters, dated 10 May 1972; 3. A letter (with envelope) from Joseph Erftemeyer, a draft resister and Monash University student, dated 31 October 1972; 4. A letter to Mrs Norma Scates (Bob's mother) from the Minister for Social Welfare regarding prison conditions, dated 26 October 1972; 5. Freedom of Information document from Attorney-General's Department regarding the remission applications in respect of Kenneth John McClelland, Robert Jeffrey Skates (sic) and Ian Robert Turner, dated 6 December 1972; and 6. A letter to Scates from the Minister for Social Welfare regarding prison conditions, dated 16 Jan 1973.
