Collection relating to the South African War service of Lieutenant Robert Gartside, 3 Bushmen's Contingent, South Africa, 1899-1901.

Wallet 1 of 2 - consists of three diaries kept by Gartside, a letter from Gartside to his cousin dated 20 January 1901, a leave form, a torn stamp, typescript extracts from newspapers and letters outlining Gartside's military career, and two newspaper articles.

Folder 1 of 3 - contains contains two diaries kept by Gartside covering details of his service, being wounded and his repatriation to Australia. One 'Lett's Metallic Diary 1899' contains entries dated from 18 May 1900 to 16 November 1900. One 'Australian diary 1900' includes entries from 2 February to 1 June 1900 and from 17 November 1900 to 7 February 1901. Added to the collection in 2009 is a typed transcription of Gartside's two diaries, completed by Mr Rob Droogleever.

Folder 2 of 3 - contains one letter from Gartside to his cousin ['Flo'] dated 20 January 1901 describing the siege of Elands River and burning houses, one envelope addressed to R Bancroft Esquire, Manchester, England [possibly the envelope which contained the letter], and one leave form for Captain Gartside dated 9 April 1901. Folder also contains one note explaining the origin of the lace handkerchief [see AWM2020.414.1].

Folder 3 of 3 - contains typescript extracts from newspapers and letters outlining Gartside's military career and one torn South African 3 pence stamp. Folder also contains two newspaper articles: one clipping from the Times dated 13 July 1901 titled 'A story of the war: the heroes of Eland's River - Defence of the Brakfontein Camp in August 1900' and one photocopy of an article from the Canberra Times dated 18 February 1980 by Frank Cranston titled 'No Boers. Looks like rain'.

Wallet 2 of 2 - custom box containing one red leather 'Robert Hamilton' 1900 diary containing entries dated from 6 February 1901 to 25 July [1901]. Diary has damage caused by a bullet.
