Description

Collection relating to the Second World War service of 424646 Flight Lieutenant Vernon Warwick Ashes DFC, 101 Squadron RAAF. Collection consists of three notebooks kept by Ashes, photocopy of extracts from Ashes flying log book, his RAAF Official Identity Card, and a citation for Ashes's Distinguished Flying Cross from the Governor General office with envelope.

History / Summary

Ashes originally joined the Army, serving with 111 Anti Tank Regiment. He switched over to the RAAF in October 1942. Ashes trained at Narrandera and Canada as part of EATS and then went to the UK as a pilot with RAF Bomber Command. He served with No 101 Squadron RAF. He flew 27 night and 5 daylight missions and was awarded the DFC. No 101 Squadron was a special squadron flying Lancasters equipped with ABC - this required an 8th (German speaking) crew member.
