Hill, Frederick J (Colonel, b.1837 - d.1907)
Description
Eighty letters from 17-year-old Lieutenant Frederick John George Hill to his family covering his service in the Crimean War from 1854-1856. Hill corresponded every three to four days, with the first letters written on board HMS Perseverance en route to Crimea in June 1855. Hill served with the Royal Horse Artillery and documents action at Balaklava and Sevastopol, May 1856 to June 1856. Other items in the collection include include a sketch map of Sebastopol and drawing of the harbour of Sebastopol.
