Description

Collection relating to the Australian Colonial Forces and Boxer Uprising service of Lieutenant Melnotte Arthur Roberts, New South Wales Naval Contingent, Australia and the United States of America, 1897-1906.

Oversized Wallet 1 of 1 - Contains two commissioning certificates of appointment and a certificate of honorary membership to the Military Order of the Dragon relating to the Australian Colonial Forces and Boxer Uprising service of Melnotte Arthur Roberts. The first commissioning certificate issued to Roberts records his appointment to the rank of Lieutenant in the New South Wales Naval Artillery Volunteers, signed by Henry Robert [Brand], Viscount Hampden, Governor of New South Wales, 29 June 1897. The second commissioning certificate issued to Roberts records his appointment to the rank of Lieutenant in the New South Wales Naval Contingent about to proceed to China on active service, signed by William [Lygon], Earl Beauchamp, Governor of New South Wales, 7 August 1900. A handwritten annotation on the recto notes the commissioning certificate was delivered on board SS Salamis whilst at sea on 9 August 1900. The remaining item in the collection comprises an honorary member certificate to the Military Order of the Dragon presented to Roberts. Numbered 1112, the certificate is signed by the President of the Order, Adna R. [Romanza] Chaffee, and Secretary, C. [Charles] D. Rhodes, 31 March 1906.
