Description

Collection related to Hugh Gilchrist, author of published monograph titled 'Australians and Greeks', first published by Halstead Press in 1992. Comprises black and white photocopies of several typed book chapters, and extensive research notes, mostly secondary sources, on Australian soldiers and nurses who served in the Greek theatre of operations, including Salonika, during the First World War. Includes copies of lists of alumni from several Australian educational institutions, who served in the Great War, and biographical information on some of these men and women. Institutions include Sydney Grammar School, Caulfield Grammar School, Queensland University, and Adelaide University. See also related Manuscripts collection, MSS0773. A copy of Gilchrist's subsequent publications titled 'Australians and Greeks', Volumes 1 & 2, are available in the Memorial's book collection, call number 305.889094 G467A. Added to this collection in 2004 is a list of Greeks serving with Australian Citizen Military Forces (CMF) during the Second World War. List was compiled by Hugh Gilchrist, from Official Records sources including the National Archives of Australia (NAA) and the Central Army Records Office (CARO), and he advises it does not purport to be entirely complete or accurate. Originally intended as an appendix to Volume 3 of 'Australians and Greeks', it was deemed too lengthy for inclusion in the publication.
