Description

Collection relating to the Procurement Division United States Army Services of Supply (USAsos) during the Second World War. Consists of three manuscripts, one folder of correspondence, and one folder of background/research documentation, all compiled by historian Karl Reginald Cramp. The material covers the historical development of the procurement program in Australia after January 1942 and the successful operation of the USAsos in meeting allied needs in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA), 1942-1945.

Wallet 1 - contains a typed manuscript which provides an overview of the demands placed on Australia as war in the Pacific intensified; information relating to the administration, and collaboration of various sectors of business and government directed at providing the resources to support the US forces in the Pacific and fulfil home requirements. The manuscript also provides detailed information collected from the engineering and signals branches.

Wallet 2 - contains a manuscript with information relating to food requirements, production, contracts and purchasing, and transportation; supply of medical equipment; chemicals and equipment needed in the case of chemical warfare; transportation directed at assembling, equipping, manning and maintaining a fleet of suitable craft.

Wallet 3 - contains a manuscript relating to the Ordnance Branch. The material relates to the maintenance of motor vehicles, general supplies, ammunition and ship armament.

Wallet 4 - contains correspondence to and from Mr Cramp as he conducted research. They include letters to USAsos officials, Australian Government Departments and companies involved with procurement. Also included are private notes, telegrams and printed material. Also includes a series of letters that deal with the conclusion of his work and the end of his tenure as an historian for the US Army.

Wallet 5 - consists of a series of files relating to food production in Australia and supplies. Also contains a copy of a curriculum vitae for Mr Cramp.
