Armstrong, James Frederick (Private, 2/21st Bn, AIF b.1919 - d.1944)
Description
Original diary kept by Armstrong while serving with the 2/21 Battalion and later as a POW of the Japanese. The diary covers the period 13 Dec. 1941 -
1 Sept. 1943. There is also a typed copy and a photocopy of the entire diary. Includes 3 b+w photos. The 2/21st was part of Gull Force which was sent to Ambon in January 1942. By February, Gull Force had been defeated and went into captivity. Armstrong was one of the prisoners sent to Hainan Island where he remained until his death in April 1944. He was killed by Chinese bandits in the "Hoban Ambush."
