Description

Collection of letters relating to the First World War service of 4128 Lance Corporal Roland Edgar Adkins, 7th Battalion. Collection consists of 18 letters (some with envelopes) written by L/Cpl Adkins to his family during August 1915 and December 1916. The letters cover his enlistment; time spent in camps in Australia; the voyage to Egypt; and service in France and Belgium. Adkins was born at Korrumburra in Victoria and often refers to the 'Burra boys' in his letters home. Also included is a notebook (with original pencil) titled Pozieres containing diary entries from 19 August 1916 to 25 February 1917; some French to English translations; a poem; and various names and addresses. Supplementary material includes: a letter to a family member; two postcards; a telegram confirming Adkins was killed in action on 4 March 1917; a receipt for a parcel sent to his next of kin; two empty / unmatched envelopes; and three news clippings.
