Description
Collection relating to the First World War service of Lieutenant Robert Samuel Farnes, 2nd Signal Troop. Collection consists of three personal diaries, three copies of unit diaries, leave pass, letters and cablegrams, training notes, news and magazine clippings, citation and statement of service, notes re 2nd Signal Troop, papers and blueprints about radio stations and wireless transmissions. Farnes served on Gallipoli and was in the 2nd last group to be evacuated. His diaries record his passage to Egypt, transfer to Gallipoli, evacuation, active service at Romani and Beersheba, communication duties in the Jordan Valley, comments on the Surafend incident and the later riots in Egypt.
