Collection relating to the Second World War service of PM2570 Able Seaman Gerald Eardley Hamilton, HMAS Lonsdale, Royal Australian Navy, 1 November 1939 - c. March 1972.
Wallet 1 of 1 - Contains papers pertaining to the service of Gerald Eardley Hamilton during the Second World War. Items include three certificates of service issued to Hamilton for service with the Royal Australian Naval Reserve and Royal Australian Navy that record personal particulars and his service history in addition to several gunnery history and torpedo history sheets that record courses he completed in these disciplines. The papers also include a printed farewell letter from Captain Philip Bowyer-Smyth to the Officers, Petty Officers and Men of HMAS Perth dated 2 November 1941, the day after he relinquished command of the ship.
The collection also contains seven newspaper clippings relating to HMAS Perth on active service during the Second World War. The articles cover the arrival of HMAS Perth in Sydney Harbour in March 1940 and her service in the Mediterranean in 1941, largely in relation to the Battle of Cape Matapan but also including the evacuation of Crete and operations at Damour on the Lebanon Coast. The last item in the collection comprises a photocopied page featuring a montage of six newspaper clippings, a short history of HMAS Perth and six ribbon bars awarded to HMAS Perth during her Second World War service.
