Collection relating to the service of Captain Francis Moran, 15 Battalion, AIF, Egypt, Gallipoli, 1915. Collection consists of twenty-one letters (original handwritten and typed copies) written by Captain Francis Moran to his mother in Queensland, during 1915.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Captain Francis Moran, 15 Battalion, AIF; bank clerk turned Area Officer; of Brisbane, Queensland; born Springsure, Queensland, 27 June 1877; educated privately; served in the Australian Commonwealth Force, South African War; became an area officer in the CMF in 1911; joined the AIF on 23 September 1914 as a Lieutenant; 16 December 1914 - promoted Captain; 2 May 1915 - wounded at Anzac; 7 August - wounded again at Anzac in the assault on Hill 971; 20 August 1915 - died at sea, aboard Hospital Ship Aquitania. Buried at sea. Mother; Ellen Moran (nee Desmond). Father; Charles Ignatius Moran.
