Description

Collection relating to the service of Paymaster's Clerk (later Paymaster Lieutenant Commander) Alfred Edwin Sharp, HMAS Australia, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), 1914-1915. Collection consists of a diary kept by Paymaster's Clerk Sharp, on board HMAS Australia, between 4 August 1914 and 23 January 1915. Recounts HMAS Australia cruising in Pacific Ocean seeking German ships; with AN&MEF at New Britain; mentions the submarine AE1 as 'missing'; duties off the west coast of South America; journey through the Straits of Magellan into the South Atlantic. This collection is notable for Sharp's detailed description of the pursuit, capture and sinking of the German supply ship "Eleanore Woermann", off the Falkland Islands in 1915.
