Collection relating to the service of 2nd Lieutenant Ernest George Smythe, 11 Battalion, Malta, 1915. Collection consists of a photostat copy of one letter written by (then) Private Smythe to his mother, while he was recuperating at Malta from a wound received during the Landing at Gallipoli. Copy made by Australian War Memorial. Location of original letter unknown.

History / Summary

Lieutenant Ernest George Smythe, 51 Battalion, AIF, who on 3 September 1916 was killed in action during an attack upon Mouquet Farm (Pozieres). Other biographical details concerning him are: clerk and commercial traveller, of Claremont, West Australia; born Woollahra, NSW; educated at Claremont Central State School; served in the CMF; enlisted in the AIF on 17 August 1914, beginning as a private in the 11th Battalion, with which he landed on Gallipoli and was wounded in the leg; transferred to 51st Battalion in Egypt early in 1916; age at time of death, 24.
