The medal is fitted with a silver loose ring suspender and a piece of 32 mm black ribbon with a 6 mm white stripe near each edge.
Awarded to recognise acts of heroism, bravery and leadership. In spite of its evident prestige The Iron Cross was a widely issued medal as almost five and a half million were awarded during the First World War. It was the equivalent of the British Mention in Despatches and the French or Belgian Croix des Guerres. This medal forms part of a collection assembled by the Memorial in the 1920s for display.
