Description

Brunswick War Merit Cross for Women. Unnamed as issued. A cross couped with slightly widening arms and concave ends. Between the arms is a 4 mm wide circle which has four crowns on the outside edge. Obverse: '1914' in the centre and monograms 'EA' (Ernst August) on the upper left and lower right and 'VL' (Victoria Luise) on the upper right and lower left of the circle. Reverse: The inscription in Gothic lettering 'fur aufopfernde Dienste im Kriege' (for devoted service in the War) on four lines on the cross and the same monogram layout as the obverse. The cross is fitted with a loose ring suspender and a piece of 29 mm sulphur yellow ribbon which has a 3 mm dark blue centre stripe and 3 mm blue stripes inset two mm from the edges.

History / Summary

Founded on 13 September 1917 and awarded to women for special merit in nursing the wounded and other philanthropic work. It has only one class. This medal forms part of a collection assembled by the Memorial in the 1920s for display.
