Description
The residence of Lieutenant (Lt) (later Captain) Thomas H Piper (left) near the port of Mudros on the island of Lemnos. The pilot on the right is unidentified. Note the COOEE sign attached to the wall. Lt Piper was an Australian but was holidaying in England when war broke out in 1914. He joined the Royal Naval Air Service and served on HMAS Ark Royal (a seaplane tender). As an aircrew member he flew reconnaissance patrols over Turkish positions during the Dardanelles Campaign in 1915. In 1917 he and his pilot (Flight Commander Hackman) were shot down and became Prisoners of the Turks for the duration of the war.
